We provided a private soccer lesson to a 14-year-old player from the New York Red Bulls Academy.

His goals were to develop individual strength and mistakes under pressure.

Since he was a member of the academy, his basic and applied skills were very high. However, he sometimes struggled to fully demonstrate them in matches, which is a common issue among development age players (middle school to high school).

In training, we first focused on improving his situational awareness by thoroughly improving his pre-ball scanning (look, decide, act).

Simply increasing his line of sight changes the way he perceives pressure and creates more time and space.

Next, we implemented “limited possession” to speed up decision-making.

Limiting the number of touches and time naturally simplifies choices and reduces hesitation.

Finally, I told him, “Mistakes are a tool to improve the quality of your decisions.” Fear of making mistakes narrows your field of vision, further delaying your decision-making. The key is to verbalize the reasons for your failures and reflect them in your next play.

By the end of practice, his face was brighter and his confidence had returned.

Soccer is both a sport of movement and a sport of thinking.

Because he is only 14 years old, I want to carefully build a foundation of judgment.

We will continue to provide coaching that supports the players’ growth while listening to their concerns.
